Wasn't this one of the main security issues with the BeOS architecture? It's not the same thing as what's being done here via Wayland. BeOS is more YOLO style direct access of the framebuffer contents, without solving any of the hard problems (I don't think it was really possible to do properly using the available hardware at the time).
