Or even just remembering the difference between a web application, a web art project, a document being hosted on the web.
Applications are meant to be used and may need to be zoomed to maintain coherency among various widgets and controls. Likewise, art projects need to preserve their design intent.
Documents, meanwhile, are meant to be read and the user is going to best know what makes things legible for them. Ideally, publishers hint some presentation ideas but allow and anticipate that the user have final control, like you suggest.
- cantSpellSober 3y agoFalse dichotomy. "Documents" are allowed to have design. They should not have bad design (bad in this case referring to legibility). Is HN a web application, an art project, or a document? IMO it's a mix of all of the above.
- meiraleal 3y agoit's definitely not an art project without a generous stretch.
- cantSpellSober 3y agoIs there no art to successfully accelerating startups?
- meiraleal 3y agoThat's quite generous. Accelerating startups is a business, a greedy one at that, many times involving manipulations, lies, scams. No, this isn't an art.
- cantSpellSober 3y ago...and yet here you are :) It's a stretch, I'll concede. It involves creative or imaginative talent expressive of technical proficiency, or conceptual ideas however. At the very least, setting the default header color to orange is an artistic decision. I mostly include it for the sake of argument, the lines blur between the categories. Being a "document" is not a reason to avoid adding CSS. Re: art, a counter to my argument would be Lubalin's, that we must sometimes reduce legibility to increase impact.
