In my head the opposite of fewer (“more”) and the opposite of less (“more”) feel like different words that happen to be homonyms. I haven’t looked it up but this is unlikely to have been the etymological history — if there ever even were two different words at all, one likely crowded the other out. But anyway, that’s how my brain works.
