I'm very curious if anyone could share reasons why Smalltalk and the system they are using here didn't "win" in the "marketplace of ideas". Performance? Native integrations? Developer preferences? Or because it was comercial and free / open source tools won even though they were less sophisticated?
I can already see that some of the ideas mentioned were completely wrong, like "buying objects on the market". "Reusability" on the object-level is very low, and nowadays we can clearly see that "re-usability" is better achieved on the "module" level (npm, cargo, etc.).
I'm like half-way through the video and basically I can see the naive believes about potential OOP that nowadays we kind of know didn't work (re-usability through inheritance, ignoring the complexity explosion etc.)
But even ignoring all this, the tooling, JITs, portability - all seemed quite nice and it's surprising that it seems all gone.
