Sort of OT, but the list of uses (https://www.apostrophe.org.uk/apostrophe-use https://www.apostrophe.org.uk/apostrophe-use) matches what I do except for "6. Apostrophes are NEVER used to denote plurals!"
I was taught that for numbers and acronyms, you do use apostrophes.
Was anyone else taught that? Or am I the only one?
- owlstuffing 3y agoWho taught you that? It is not proper use. I cringe when I see ABC’s and 123’s. Worse than fingernails on the chalkboard.
- gavinhoward 3y agoFunny, because I feel the exact opposite. And the answer is every English teacher I had growing up.
- hollerith 3y ago>every English teacher I had growing up. I doubt that.
- gavinhoward 3y agoWell, there were some that didn't talk about it, but the ones that did all said the same thing.
- hollerith 3y agoHuh. All the style manuals were saying something quite different last time I checked. Strange!
- thaumasiotes 3y agoIn modern use it is apparently common to write e.g. 40ties or 90ties. I'm not sure what the thinking is, or why 40s or 90s aren't "enough".
