I think there is more to it and should not be dismissed out of hand. Upload a photo of this proposed system in action. Prove it doesn't look like a mess. See if the wastage at start and end of rack is problematic. Then upload a video of putting a random clothing item in and also removing one. There is a reason people don't do this, try it and see.
