OpenAI pauses ChatGPT Plus sign-ups as it 'hits capacity'
- sharemywin 3y agoI wonder what that capacity is?
- LewisVerstappen 3y agoI'm assuming this is because of a limit with Azure? Is OpenAI required to only use Azure services as part of their M$ investment? Very frustrating to still have the limits on GPT-4. Was hoping this could be eased with the release of Turbo.
- rossdavidh 3y agoSo, a while back I was reading rumors that the electricity bill for OpenAI hardware was actually large enough to be of concern. I'm wondering if this is actually a $$ issue rather than a "capacity" issue? As the article puts it, "If only OpenAI had a major investor with a cloud service. One that it claims can scale effortlessly to meet demand..." It seems unlikely that OpenAI has maxed out Azure, so this has to mean that Microsoft, while a big investor in OpenAI, is not willing to put up enough server capacity? Or else, OpenAI are trying hard to cut their burn rate so that they can demonstrate a path to profitability?
- dragonwriter 3y ago> I'm wondering if this is actually a $$ issue rather than a "capacity" issue? Short of hitting something like global exhaustion of necessary raw materials or other inputs, all capacity issues are money issues.
- rossdavidh 3y agoIn the long run, yes, but it takes some time to turn $$ into capacity (of just about anything), and they seem to be saying they're just short of capacity, whereas it seems more likely that they are short of money. But your point is correct. It is intriguing that this means either OpenAI, or Microsoft (their biggest investor), or both, are short of money. Or the one is short of money, and the other is short of confidence that they should put more money into it?
