I think it's true that "it's not about you" - but management is also not some kind of noble sacrifice either. The article is saying that being authentic with your team about your own strengths and weaknesses and focusing on their needs will lead to better outcomes. Pretending you're equals when there's a clear power dynamic at play isn't being authentic.

It's like in a classroom when teachers don't behave as authority figures, but then get frustrated when some kids don't treat them like one. You need to expect the outcomes your leadership style is bound to attract.
