Ask HN: What do you think of accessibility bounties?
What do you think of companies paying out accessibility bounties similar to bug bounties for finding and reporting accessibility issues?
- bell-cot 3y agoFinding accessibility bugs does not require 1337 skillz, nor hours speculatively chasing down possible rabbit holes, nor ... Just hire a few people with various accessibility issues, and have them go through your site looking for issues.
- logicallee 3y agoif you hire them just to look for disability issues then you have to pay them even if there are no issues and nothing to fix, I'm not sure it would be a full time job. Regarding the fact that it doesn't take 1337 skillz and hours I guess it means people with accessibility issues can notice it right away right? So do you think users would report accessibility issues by themselves? So do you think it is enough to have an accessibility contact and users with an issue would report the issue?
- bell-cot 3y agoDisclaimer: IANAL, nor even aware of what jurisdiction(s) you might be in. That reality of what you "really should do" depends enormously on a load of details that we don't know. > ...have to pay them even if there are no issues... And factory QC inspectors don't work for free on days when they didn't spot any defective widgets, and you have to pay your insurance premiums even when you have no claims, and your attorney's advice isn't gratis when he says you did the correct thing, and ... > ...not sure it would be a full time job. If it's not full time - the modern labor market has part-time, contractors, auditing firms, etc. > ...and users with an issue would report the issue? Whatever else you're doing - if accessibility is either a real or performative priority, then having some "report issues to" contact would probably be good. Again, IANAL.
