When my toddler was first learning to talk, we had some pictures of felines hanging on the walls; some were cats and others were kittens.
She quickly generalized; henceforth, both of them were "catten".

- djmips 3y agoMy toddler understood that places to buy things were called stores and understood eating - so restaurants were deemed 'eating stores'. And we just went with that for a long time and now they are grown we still call them eating stores for fun sometimes. :)
- liminalsunset 3y agoInterestingly, in Chinese, the actual word for a "restaurant" is often quite literally translated, "meal/food store", or 饭店, and a 店 is just a store.
