Nikki Haley calls social media anonymity a "national security threat"
- Terretta 3y agoQuote: “When I get into office, the first thing we have to do, social media accounts, social media companies, they have to show America their algorithms,” said Haley, a 2024 GOP presidential primary candidate, in a Fox News clip posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. “Let us see why they’re pushing what they’re pushing,” Haley continued. “The second thing is, every person on social media should be verified, by their name. That’s, first of all, it’s a national security threat. When you do that, all of a sudden, people have to stand by what they say.” Twitter search to reactions: https://twitter.com/search?q=nikki%20haley%20social%20media&src=typed_query&f=top https://twitter.com/search?q=nikki%20haley%20social%20media&...
- yuppie_scum 3y agoWhat if politicians had to stand by what they say?
- sshine 3y agoThat’d be a national security threat.
- slackfan 3y agoWhat anonymity? Social media is literally built for the oversharing of personal information. ...Though I suppose from the perspective of the MilIndustrial complex, any sort of anonymity is a threat.
- jsdeveloper 3y agoThe best way to surf internet is to remain anonymous. By doing so you automatically save yourself from all those mess. instead institution should be teaching kids on how to remain truly anonymous on internet.
- 082349872349872 3y agoif not part of public education, one would hope that it might at least be provided at home, eg https://blog.plover.com/lang/embedded.html https://blog.plover.com/lang/embedded.html
- 082349872349872 3y agoApparently Ms Haley has never read The Federalist Papers? https://guides.loc.gov/federalist-papers/full-text https://guides.loc.gov/federalist-papers/full-text
- devonnull 3y agoI doubt she's read much beyond the Fox News website ...
- zlg_codes 3y agoIt's pathetic that entire countries hide behind such garbage rhetoric as 'national security' and 'for the children' and other paper thin reasoning. Nikki Haley has no business deciding policy in this country. These people want social control and are willing to misrepresent anything in order to get it. That's why I automatically reject any argument from the US that has to do with children or national security. They are bullshit reasons. This country doesn't help children, and if it cared about security it'd have kneecapped this MAGA shit when it first started. As usual, grandstanding and empty rhetoric from the right.
- browningstreet 3y ago> has no business deciding policy in this country > grandstanding and empty rhetoric Unless voted in.. and a lot of the times these early phases of rhetoric prime the base to accept them, particularly when building up the "other" enemies.
- hackeraccount 3y agoThat's a weird one. Many politicians say crazy stuff like this sure - and I'll even vote for them hoping they either don't mean it, won't remember it or that it can't possibly be done. In any case the puzzling thing to me is this: Who exactly is the audience for this? So far as I know the only people with a Bee in their bonnet about anonymity are some people concerned about money going into politics and while you can make arguments about the merits or not of that I don't think anyone would disagree that it's a concern of Democrats not Republicans. So either Haley is acting not calculating kooky but just hum drum kooky or her staff is really out of touch or some combination there of. Still better then Trump but this doesn't do her credit.
- fidotron 3y agoI can get behind the idea that pretending to be someone else is bad (either a human or AI pretending to be someone they are not) but chasing anonymity by itself is a transparent attempt to gatekeep opinions expressed in the public realm. Given these days all such outbursts are recorded for all eternity you would have to be an absolute idiot to say anything at all since the most mundane comment today could readily get you utterly ostracized in 20 years time. Which of course is the entire idea, but has the side effect that the wisest people will be avoiding all participation.
