We used to build fanless computers. This tech will be very useful in environments that have wide temperature ranges throughout the year from extreme cold to extreme heat. I just took a red eye flight so my brain is scrambled but this tech could also be useful to help dampen rapid temp changes (thermal shocks). On the extreme cold side, you can use heaters to warm up your components to boot temperature, however if said component is connected your heatsink you are fighting a losing battle.
