That doesn't help much when electricity cost is 4-5x more per kWh. I can heat with either AC or gas, but the latter comes out cheaper.

- konschubert 3y agoBut it isn’t.
- dontlaugh 3y agoIt's right there on my bill. This has been the typical price ratio in the UK for a while now.
- jahnu 3y agoIt helps with carbon emissions though.
- dontlaugh 3y agoPotentially, if electricity wasn't also often generated with gas. Also, why would I pay more to have less comfortable heating? Individual action like that does nothing. The solution is collective.
- jahnu 3y agoI believe if the electricity is generated with gas it’s still less carbon intensive due to gas power plants being more efficient than gas heaters in homes.
- dontlaugh 3y agoSure, but condensing boilers are already 90% efficient. The difference will likely be lost in electricity transmission.
- jahnu 3y agoIt’s a reasonable guess but apparently heat pumps win “With today’s refrigerants, heat pumps still reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% compared with a gas boiler, even when running on emissions‐intensive electricity.” https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-heat-pumps/executive-summary# https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-heat-pumps/executi...
- ZeroGravitas 3y agoCondensing boilers only reach that efficiency if you do the same kind of radiator sizing that people complain about needing to do for heat pumps. Measured efficiency is 10-25% lower unless set up correctly. - dewclin 3y agoI'm in the UK. Looking at my bill, per kWh electricity is 3x more expensive than gas: electricity: 30.823p gas: 9.756p It's much cheaper to heat my house with gas.
