Robbery is not a violent crime unless they specifically threaten violence. If you just give someone your stuff when they ask you because you feel threatened that's not enough. You actually have to be threatened for violence to occur.
- happytoexplain 3y agoThis is wild. If somebody demands your wallet, there is an implicit threat of violence. It's an awful, scary, dehumanizing experience that destroys your sense of communal society. The lack of proper sympathy for victims of robbery is emblematic of how long and far we have strayed from a basic functioning trust-based society. If there is even a hint of an imagined whiff that a person might disagree with us on some semi-related social issue, we immediately block out 100% of what should be normal baseline human sympathy.
- uoaei 3y agoAnd what of the sympathy for the dehumanized "criminals"? Have you ever been in such a desperate position that threatening violence on another person seems like a good idea? I came close once and I can tell you it completely changes your worldview. Empathy for those who have literally no other options in life is the way to solve this, because then we can talk in good faith about what it really takes to bring them back into the fold of society. Responding to crimes that have already happened is never going to work, you have to address the root causes of crime (nor does trying to predict crime, talk about lack of trust) -- that would among other things address the trust-based society problem we're having.
- piva00 3y agoIt is still violent. I come from a poor country, where violence is extremely common, I've been robbed both at gunpoint as by veiled threats multiple times, being robbed is violent no matter if a gun, knife, or any other weapon is displayed or not. I feel sympathy for the ones causing it, getting to that point isn't in the majority of cases by choice and much more stemming from systemic issues, still it's violence against another human being, there's no sympathy that will change this.
