Back around 1970 or 1971 I became friends with a graduate student by the name of Ralph Taggart at Michigan State who was one of the true pioneers of SSTV. He had just a technicians license at the time so we partnered and I was the operator helping him access the HF bands through the university station W8SH.
He later became a NatSci professor at MSU and is now retired. We participated together in the first SSTV contest contacting hams all over the US and a few in Europe and one in South Africa.
SSTV grew more popular but never reached critical mass with hams. Younger hams these days are far more interested in the new digital modes.
