OOo interesting. Maybe it's one of those "decision pending" things and
the people who took them down were, er... scared off by lawyers making
noises.
Of course the manufacturers would assert legality. With a quick read
it seems to me a noise, even if intended to cause distress would not
likely be assault, but might be injury to the person above a certain
high SPL level of decibels. The more obvious thing I see is a public
nuisance angle. Even if the police wouldn't touch it, local
authorities could, as an environmental health issue.
