Not sure if it’s related or not but I noticed the UX has changed on the web interface and when I ask for code, it now defaults to running it through an interpreter with a hidden view by default. This is very annoying to me as I want to mostly read the code, not have it be executed without any context
- logicchains 3y agoOn the bright side, in some cases at least it includes a test case, runs it, and if it fails then reads the error and tries to fix the code, all in a single run.
- alfonsodev 3y agoare you writing Python code? I wonder if this behavior just applies to Python as I recall code interpreter is Python only.
- jerpint 3y agoYes mostly python
- DonHopkins 3y agoIs it smart enough to solve the halting problem and not bother running code with infinite loops?
- appplication 3y agoInfinite loops and the halting problem are separate issues. You can detect infinite loops with basic static analysis.
- jhardy54 3y agoYou can detect some infinite loops with basic static analysis, but detecting all infinite loops would mean that you’ve solved the halting problem.
- ben_w 3y agoI think you can detect either all infinite loops or only infinite loops, but there are many loops which might or might not be infinite under any possible test? So you could refuse to run any code with a loop whose termination isn't easily proven to be guaranteed[0], without violating the halting problem. [0] And, in practice, terminating quickly. I doubt they want people to start mining bitcoin on all of those expensive H100s.
- DonHopkins 3y agoWay back in the day, I heard a rumor that the Cray 1 could execute an infinite loop in 7.6 seconds.
- rockemsockem 3y agoThe practical solution to the halting problem is to be impatient and just kill any computation that takes longer than N minutes
- DonHopkins 3y agoIt just so happens that OpenAI is looking to hire a Killswitch Engineer for GPT-5: https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/11vwlct/humor_openai_is_hiring_a_killswitch_engineer_for/ https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/11vwlct/humor_...
- pllbnk 3y agoNow it also annoyingly searches almost anything on Bing. I was interested in some coffee machine recommendation/research and it started searching on Bing, which I would have done myself if I wanted to do that. Only after explicitly instructing it not to search for information online I could start asking it the interesting questions.
