John von Neumann Interview [video]
- tim333 3y agoSo now we maybe approach the "essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity)
- openquery 3y agoThe only video footage I've managed to find of John von Neumann.
- bitshiftfaced 3y agoThe Mathematical Association of America put together a documentary of John von Neumann in 1966, and they mentioned in it that this was the only footage they were able to find of him.

- Oarch 3y agoGreat find! Teller was especially eloquent.
- neilv 3y agoIt's a good thing for us that Von Neumann wasn't an evil genius.

- TuringTourist 3y agoHe could have been, its possible nobody has been clever enough to see it yet.
- m_a_g 3y agoHe was a strong proponent of using nuclear first strikes (based on game theory and nothing else) against the USSR. So your point is debatable.
- keithalewis 3y agoOr maybe on first hand experience with communism.
- mjhay 3y agoVon Neumann came to the US long before Hungary became Communist.
- SaintGhurka 3y agoHungary's red terror and the Hungarian soviet Republic were in 1919
- trsohmers 3y agoI think the more accurate thing was first hand experience with authoritarianism and totalitarianism. Stalin and Hitler were two sides of the same coin.
- bitshiftfaced 3y agoNeumann's first hand experience with communism is that of Hungary's 1919 brush with Béla Kun.

- jgilias 3y agoIt’s somehow very cool how the host (teacher ?) called him Janoś near the end of the footage.
- julianeon 3y agoIt's interesting that the very first question - the very first question, in the mid-1950s! - to von Neumann is about STEM education, and his answer is, we need more people, and we need more & better education. And we need it badly. Now I'll pause here to say that, when we praise a guy like von Neumann, it can have a distancing effect. If for example I say "this site needs a better UI," it's something we'll usually take at face value, on its merits. But if, say, Elon Musk says the same thing, it becomes more like trivia associated with Elon Musk, not a statement we think through by itself. If we treat von Neumann like a guy with authority speaking on the topic of science education, then you could take his words, almost without any change, repeat them in 2023, and find they are as true now as they were then. As food for thought, I'd say, if you consider von Neumann to be a personal hero, then consider honoring him by doing what you can for science education.
- richard___ 3y agoScience education has been exponentially improved by chatgpt
- turzmo 3y agoNice troll
- richard___ 3y agoI'm not trolling. My educational credentials >> the downvoters, that I can say
- turzmo 3y agoPerhaps you can expand on why you think that’s the case then?
- mycall 3y agoAre there any educational science program GPTs yet?

- ndr 3y agoThis. The keeps alternating between the person and the achievement, digging quite a bit to give a picture of all the different disciplines JVN was involved in. Plus a lot of interesting trivia. For instance, did you know that he met his second wife Klára Dán, the first person to implement Monte Carlo, in... Monte Carlo? The audio book is very good too, but you'll want to look at some of the pictures.
