I had a Cisco 1604 ISDN router setup at work to autodial to save money rather than being connected all of the time. Unfortunately, I discovered IBM AIX when the web browser package was installed contained periodic telemetry dial-home to Big Blue every hour or so that prevented the lab network from idling happily until I added a firewall rule to the router to block that sneaky shit. Even in the late 90's, Microsoft, Sun, and Novell weren't as brazen about telemetry as IBM.
