US tech war on China has become a race between how fast Nvidia can make, sell and ship degraded chips vs US lawmakers ability to push through export control legislation. 6-12 months seems to be the window of opportunity. The fact that Nvidia are trying at all says it all about the size and importance of the China market to chip design and manufacturing

China as a customer means very little; but Nvidia probably knows that China will pay top-dollar for last-gen tech on dirt cheap 8nm/whatever silicon. Indeed like you said though, it's a window of opportunity. If Nvidia can run a cheap-o batch of Ampere inferencing hardware and sell it at GH200 prices, that's a great deal for them. US legislators are going to want their head for it, and will probably force Nvidia to make software sanctions later down the line. Who knows how well that will work.
