The Wormwood Trilogy by Tade Thompson[1] blew my mind. Most of the story takes place in Nigeria. The author was born in the UK but grew up in Nigeria. Tamsyn Muir[2] is from New Zealand. Her Locked Tomb series is sci-fi/fantasy/horror but ... funny? The books get more out there as the series progresses. I know Muir was nominated for / won a few Hugos so yeah I bet your idea of checking those awards is a good one.
