> IAMF is designed to enable creatives to revolutionize immersive audio experiences across a myriad of applications, from streaming and gaming to augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as traditional broadcasting.
Seems like a focus is placed on spatial audio. I would guess this must be competing with something like Dolby Atmos, but I have no idea. Curious to hear if anyone has additional context to deliver that isn't in the form of PR-speak.
- repelsteeltje 3y agoBy no means an expert, but I think apart from the hype, general reception of Dolby Atmos or (DTS:X spatial audio) was luke warm at best. Lossless audio has had more interest recently. And of course, the royalties stuff does get in the way of adoption. Expect browsers to pick up new CODECs like IAMF soon, then a bunch of big platforms will support it. Then maybe a phone here and there, and finally TV sets, audio systems etc. Think: years.
- pipo234 3y agoInteresting! Had a look at the spec [1] which looks a lot like AV1. Has the same OBU elementary stream concepts, ISO 14496-12 bindings, codec param string, the whole enchilada. What's missing so far is DRM (common encryption), but I'm sure they're already working on it.
