G/O Media shutters Jezebel, lays off 23 people
- cbozeman 3y agoCouldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people. This site has long been a thinly veiled man-hating haven for the most depressed and cynical human beings on the planet and I'm beyond thrilled to see it go. I was supremely disappointed when Thiel's takedown of Gawker didn't also kill Jezebel. I've absolutely had it with so-called "journalism" that outlets like these have been doing. I get better journalism listening to Blocked & Reported which is solely about, as the hosts themselves admit, "Internet bullshit". It's a damned travesty - the depths to which Western journalism has sunk.
- AtlasBarfed 3y agoHey, female incels need a place too? IMO the damage that Jezebel really did was, despite its ultra feminist man hating, the site was still basically a celebrity gossip rag. The "hey we are taking a radical intellectual take on male dominated society" gets really undermined by "oh and I just have to know the latest on Bennifer". I do understand though, you need clicks somehow, but you could feel the self-loathing by the employees. I hope Gizmodo goes away too. The amount of anti-intellectualism, ignorance of basic alternative energy and EV trends, and cheerleading for "big internet" is nauseating. Jalopnik can't exist without hating on Elon Musk. Yes there's a lot to hate, but they are definitely way over the "outrageous irrational hatred" and it spills into EVs, alternative energy, and battery tech ignorance/misinformation on the regular because of it.
- muoni 3y ago> IMO the damage that Jezebel really did was, despite its ultra feminist man hating Not really true. As soon as any of those men called himself a woman they would be fawning all over him. Also Jezebel was very much in favor of sex work despite all the very well documented harms to women. Aside from a bit of spicy rhetoric, they were just your typical handmaiden libfems pandering to male desires. It's no loss.
- cantSpellSober 3y agoMost of those talking points are covered in the original discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38208742 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38208742 Even your opening line, Theil, journalism bad, etc
- cbozeman 3y agoThat's the original discussion for you, maybe. I didn't see that one. At any rate, whoever wrote is right. Except the ordering of your words is wrong. Journalism not bad. Bad journalism is bad - it's worse than bad, it's a disservice to the public. Journalists have a duty to the public and must be held to the highest ethical standards.
- cantSpellSober 3y agoI just didn't feel like a subtle summary of an endlessly regurgitated sound bite. Plenty of examples in the original, like this one: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38210394 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38210394
- JCharante 3y ago> The big picture: Publishers that are heavily dependent on digital advertising have been forced to reimagine their business models to account for volatility in the ad market. Scapegoat. The gizmodo & kotaku family of sites have a history of despicable actions committed and struggle to create any value.
- cantSpellSober 3y agoTakes bravery to talk shit about tech or gaming sites on this one, thank you. Enjoy downvotes as your reward :( I don't think it's a total scapegoat, Google ate the advertising market, ad-based revenue is quickly becoming an unsustainable model.

- i386 3y agoI miss the days when Jezebel articles would be cross posted to Gawker.com and the commenter cultures would collide. Truly a golden age.
- norwalkbear 3y agoMaybe there is a god, Jezebel inspired man hating to an obnoxious level, my cousin killed himself over their height shaming stuff
- cantSpellSober 3y agoI'm truly sorry for your loss. I'm fearful of how much easier it is to share hate speech now, compared to even just a decade ago. You're not alone in your suffering or grief. Wishing you peace.
- stuckinhell 3y agoJezebel was a cancer that promoted dehumanization. The people who worked there deserve jail for the hate they spread into the world.
- cantSpellSober 3y ago[flagged]
- phendrenad2 3y agoWas Jezebel ever profitable? Maybe I'm a fool but I find it hard to believe that anyone was clicking on the endless stream of "men are the worst" articles. It seems like a startup company that tried a niche and found no value there. Glad we got that out of the way, I guess.
