The onedrive integration is one of the most annoying things about windows for me right now. Not just the constant nagging, nor the "Adverts" pasted over my computer, but one day I woke up and something had decided to move all my documents to a new "onedrive" folder, despite never signing up for anything. (Or at least "asked me" in some super easy to miss clickthrough)
This naturally broke a stack of apps and scripts, and my expectations. And as explorer seems to do some magic to make it /look/ like everything is in the same place, but then causes inconsistency with other ways of accessing folders, breaks decades of learned experience on how the model of files and folders work.
And this was still on windows 10 - at least if there's an upgrade migration you /expect/ some things to work a bit differently, and then have the option of not upgrading if that behavior is important. But what's the point of having "versions" if you just backport all the breaking changes anyway?
- lencastre 3y agoHave you tried shutup10?
- jtriangle 3y agoI prefer chris titus's windows script, automates the whole process.
- Barrin92 3y agoI would not recommend that script. On the default settings it messes with quite a few group policies which for example ends up preventing Visual Studio from installing dependencies. (i.e. InstallDefault, which prevents webview2 from being installed)
- kimixa 3y agoI think I tried something similar to wipe out the Edge and Onedrive nagware but it seemed to break windows update, so ended up reverting it.
- jtriangle 3y agoI haven't had any real issues with it for what I do. If you find that it breaks something, submit an issue to the git, I'm sure it can be worked around.
- IG_Semmelweiss 3y agocurrently choosing between windows 10 , 11 or 11 pro. Can you elaborate about shutup10 ?
- rdedev 3y agoAnother thing that's bugged me is in office the default location to save a file seems to be on the cloud. Most of the time I have to specifically mention that I want to save it in my PC and then choose the location
- _Algernon_ 3y agoBreaking users' models of how a system works seems to be the playbook almost every software product these days. I hate it. Software developers / designers do not respect or value users' muscle memory they spent half a lifetime developing at all. Even in products which ostensibly do want their users to develop expertise without being advertisement driven, such as Excel, Powerpoint or Word. Imagine if cars worked the same way: Every time you bought a new car, the steering wheel, pedals and so on are shuffled around because "users learn to drive 0.01% faster according to a AB-tests" or whatever. Fuck everyone who already got their license I guess.
- wannacboatmovie 3y ago> This naturally broke a stack of apps and scripts, and my expectations. A great example of why you should be using environment variables and the proper system API calls to determine path locations, not hard coding them. But never let an opportunity to blame Microsoft for poor application code go to waste. Sounds like your expectations are a bit low.
- atlas_hugged 3y agoReally dude? That’s your take?
- readthenotes1 3y agoDo you complain why your Tesla runs out of gas ? Seems like the same complaint to me.
- wannacboatmovie 3y agoSorry you ship code that's hard coded to C:\Crapware. It's unfortunate you think that's okay even though it violates conventions Microsoft has published for oh I don't know 30 years. Some people never learn.
- verall 3y agoI'm pretty sure that code which lands in C:\Crapware actually would not be affected by the above issue. I install all of my dev shit in C: anything else gives path length errors in MSVC anyways.
- ofslidingfeet 3y agoOh is there some kind of OneDrive API to help me "determine path locations" per Microsoft's preferences also?
- kimixa 3y agoAnd here I was thinking %HOMEDRIVE% %HOMEPATH% /were/ the "proper" variables to use. Or at least get to a location that I an responsible for the locations and addressing beyond that point. Please enlighten me on what should be used instead.
- jiggawatts 3y agoWorse still, I have a BYoD laptop that I own myself but use for work. If you accidentally click the wrong (BIG!) button instead of the correct (tiny!) link during authentication then... SURPRISE... you are now enrolled into mobile device management (InTune). One of the most common policies is to force home directory migration to OneDrive. Imagine my surprise when I get an automated email from a customer Microsoft 365 tenant saying that I had shared content that violates their corporate policy. No I hadn't. Microsoft did. They hoovered up my content, shoved it into the customer's OneDrive, and then applied data loss prevention (DLP) policy. You know... to stop people sharing things through OneDrive they shouldn't be. It's just unfathomable to me that we've all just rolled over and accepted this as normal. Literal dark patterns by every definition of the term designed to coerce and trick everyone in the world to store their data in Microsoft's cloud whether they choose to or not. Secrets. Passwords. Source code. Classified documents. Private pictures of my family. Pictures of my naked children. Sluuuuurp! Got to meet those KPIs at any cost. If anyone from Microsoft is lurking in this thread: THIS is how megacorporations end. This. You take a giant shit on your evangelists, your technical experts, then they'll jump ship. The other 99% of users don't matter. They really don't. They'll follow where the 1% go. This has played out over and over. It destroyed Digg. It destroyed Slashdot. It destroyed IBM. It will destroy Microsoft in time. PS: Because of this incident I now refuse to store anything in any of the pre-defined folders like "Documents" or "Pictures". I keep everything in a separate folder hierarchy outside of my user profile because I can no longer trust my own personal computer to keep files where I put them.
- gumballindie 3y agoWhy, i ask myself often, would people choose to evangelise products for free on behalf of corporations that literarily dont acknowledge their existence? Is it the same mental process that makes people idolise celebrities? A lack of belonging? A need to be a part of something bigger? Why not simply choose a worthy cause? Why not evangelise freedom, privacy, and security focused, community driven, projects, and be a part of a community that not only needs you but appreciates you?
- MrMember 3y agoThe same thing happened to me. Now I have two versions of "Documents" in different locations and not everything gets put in the same one. I'm done with Windows once 10 loses support, lately it seems like it's going out of its way to annoy me in as many ways as possible.
