I see this problem in a lot of software I care about (media production, office, mathematics). There are open source alternatives to the proprietary big ones, but they’re all just “ok” at best - and most of them aren’t. E.g. DAWs like Cubase or Live vs Ardour, MS Office vs LibreOffice, Mathematica vs SageMath (which does have some of its own strengths though)
