Decentralized Patreon on Lightning Is Here
- dsr_ 3y agoThese folks didn't read https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1824441.html https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1824441.html and they're going to suffer for it. (It was discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37808115 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37808115 )
- ramesh31 3y ago> These folks didn't read https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1824441.html https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1824441.html and they're going to suffer for it. None of the business logic matters at all. Patreon is a payments company, full stop. You compete with them by creating a better payments system, that can offer higher margins and less fragility.
- yorwba 3y agoPatreon is more like a frontend for payment companies. The backend is either Stripe, PayPal or Payoneer. https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/208656246-How-payouts-work https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/208656246-How-... If you create a better payments system but ignore the business logic that makes people want a frontend, you can maybe compete with Stripe, PayPal and Payoneer, but not with Patreon.
- toomuchtodo 3y agoThis is salient comment. Plug into FedNow in the US and Wise internationally for P2P payments and call it a day. If you don’t want to pick a bank, FiServ, ACI, and Jack Henry can all provide you these domestic low cost payment rails. You’re a content store, and if payments are small amounts, you must drive down payment costs.
- stevenicr 3y agoI was under the impression patreon did adults-only content that is not allowed by stripe / paypal (although now I think of it, I recall paypal loosening this a bit maybe?) - any idea if the ones you mentioned also censor in this way?

- sMarsIntruder 3y agoLightning is Bitcoin, which is not “crypto”.
- egypturnash 3y agoBitcoin is not "crypto"? What is it then? The introduction of Satoshi's paper[1] describes it as "an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust, allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party." 1: https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf
- timbit42 3y agoBitcoin is a cryptocurrency. It uses cryptography but it is not a cryptography.
- egypturnash 3y agoAre you aware that both "cryptography" and "cryptocurrency" are both commonly shortened to "crypto"? Merriam-Webster is very much about watching usage, and this is what they currently say (without the usage examples): *crypto*, noun 1: a person who adheres or belongs secretly to a party, sect, or other group 2: CRYPTOGRAPHY sense 2 3: CRYPTOCURRENCY (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crypto https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crypto)
- sMarsIntruder 3y agoOh my god, are you really argumenting with this stuff that I already know? Bitcoin is not “crypto” since cannot be put in the same circle of what you call “crypto”, or better, Shitcoins. Thanks for unvoting your brains

- tsujamin 3y ago> ... service called Zapple Pay (which we covered here back in July), which initial goal was to help iOS users escape Apple's censorship on Zaps. You could then connect your Lightning wallet to Zapple Pay through NWC, paste your Nostr public key (a.k.a npub), and from then on the Zapple Pay service would watch your Nostr notes and, any time you responded to a note with a specific emoji, trigger a notification to your Lightning wallet over NWC, telling to zap the note you were responding too. Zapple Pay, Zaps, Lightning, NWC, Nostr, npub, zap the note etc etc - truly a technology simple enough and ready for adoption by your average joe
- teekert 3y agoNew tech often comes with a completely new nomenclature. Existing language is just to cumbersome to use when every second word requires explanation because it is a new concept. You also see this with Nix, it’s a new paradigm and it suffers from the same problems.
- fragmede 3y agookay, but "zapple pay"?
- teekert 3y agoYeah ok. Zapple pay is hard to take serious.
- stonogo 3y agoThis isn't new tech, it's just a chat bot that triggers payments, with some light trademark infringement. The reason they're burdening their product description with twee jargon is because their target market is people who choose products based on these buzzwords. If it were a broad target market it would just use English to describe this stuff, and it wouldn't be explicit about dodging the policies of the platform they've chosen to trade on.
- friend_and_foe 3y agoEmail addresses, DNS records, IP addresses, domain names etc etc truly a technology simple enough and ready for adoption by your average Joe.
