I is so apropos that the article links to Slashdot which has the exact same portal for the last 20 years :). I was in the University of Texas back then CS dept (1996). We had some presentations from Red Hat and Microsoft. Microsoft pitch was that Linux was like a doggie under the Christmas Tree. Fun present that will pee all over the place. What would Microsoft be then? A life-sized stuffed toy dog?
