Punch Cards or Punched Cards?
- muragekibicho 3y agoThe wiki editor of On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) rants in the weirdest of places. [Incidentally, today these cards are sometimes referred to as "punch cards" (sic). This is wrong, they were always called "punched cards". Anyone who says "punch cards" is showing they know nothing about the subject. Saying "punch cards" is like saying "hike boots" or "walk stick" or "chew gum".]
- jjgreen 3y agoI had a little exposure to punched cards in their dying days, never heard "punch cards". Mind you, ask for a "boxed set" of DVDs or whatever and you get a puzzled look, "You mean the box set?".
- muragekibicho 3y agoHaha. Yesterday a HN comment about "punch cards" went viral. Idk if you saw it - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38151299#38170845 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38151299#38170845
- jjgreen 3y agoMissed that, good thread, thanks!
- 31337Logic 3y agoIn Canada it is (well, was) perfectly fine to call them "punch cards". See the UWaterloo user's reply as an example. I don't see what the big deal is.
