Absolutely, this is what I said when chat control was first proposed; it will only serve to make criminals out of ordinary people.
And even worse, I foresee not only a black market of app distribution without backdoors, but also a lot of young people will prefer these apps because young people are going to be young people online. And if they know what it means to communicate safely I'm sure they will prefer it over anything else.
- hellojesus 3y agoPeople will just start building g from source to ensure their apps aren't backdoored. This will happen all the way down to the lowest level (e.g., mass migration to grapheneos). Maybe not enough due to proprietary baseband blobs, or maybe govs will try to outlaw unlocked bootloaders, but that is likely where things would go.
