The best argument I have is « we’re giving tools to the fascists that will come into power in the future ». It’s more likely than not that every country will have a « wrong side of history » gov coming to power, sooner rather than later
- RcouF1uZ4gsC 3y agoIf fascists come to power, you are kind of screwed anyway. Rubber hose cryptanalysis is pretty effective.
- wongarsu 3y agoRubber hose cryptoanalysis doesn't scale all that well. Sure, you can build a traditional surveillance apparatus to find and squash and dissidence, but unencrypted internet makes this a lot cheaper and more effective. At the very least you can force your opposition to give up the advantages of digital communication, and catch those that don't (and change public online discourse through chilling effects)
