The 2014 (doesn't time fly) edition of the ICFP Programming Contest had participants make a Pacman brain, deliverable in SECD machine assembly, and ghost brains, deliverable in a simple microcontroller assembly.
Most teams, ours included, wrote 2 (probably rather crappy) compilers in 3 days.
