Ruby Gems Download Trends: An Analysis from 2013 to 2023
- ultrarunner 3y agoThere's an interactive graph linked in the source [0] that provides individual days for measurements. The dates and download counts are also available as arrays in the page source. I didn't dive deep, but it appears that the lower bound of the graph is downloads on Sundays. The last spike is around April 11th 2023, and the lowest recent high is August 17th. Not sure how much can be read into this (does high weekend usage correlate with developer excitement? Does the reduction in growth over the last few months reflect stability? Stagnation?) but it was interesting anyway. [0] https://bestgems.org/stat/downloads https://bestgems.org/stat/downloads
- gls2ro 3y agoYou are bringing an interesting point (and with your permission maybe I can update in few days when I have time this article with your data point) about increased number of downloads in weekends. If there are spikes during the weekends then I don't think we can count them on companies running CI/CD pipelines. Regarding the reduction in growh over the few months, I think that is a hard to assess on such a lower scale. I think only in 6 months to 1 year we can look back at this period and see if the trend is going down or not. I am also biased :) because I like Ruby and I am in general an optimistic person.
