The future of AI is open not closed
Lots in the news this week regarding closed AI APIs. But it's been proven time and time again that the open approach wins in the end. There will always be a group of developers that aren't willing to adopt the closed approach. Companies like Hugging Face are the ones people will want to believe in and it will be hard to overcome. Just like what happened with Linux.
- aeternum 3y agoDid open source really win in the end even with Web2? It enabled a bunch of SaaS companies to build subscription-based online services. Those are generally more opaque than even compiled closed-source software.
- dmezzetti 3y agoThe entire stack was usually built with open source tools, so that's up for debate.
- aeternum 3y agoSure but the idea was that open source should be free and available to all, no longer constrained by the cost of physical atoms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source#%22Open%22_versus_%22free%22_versus_%22free_and_open%22 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source#%22Open%22_versus_... SaaS is the polar opposite. It's not free and open in either of the senses. It's about as far as you can get from the GNU manifesto.
