I mean, I'll be the first to admit that most of my ~250 Facebook "friends" are acquaintances of varying degrees, but there's a good 10-20 people who I'd consider great friends, who I feel a great emotional affinity for. Are you saying this is rare in American culture? It certainly doesn't seem so to me, but of course all I have is my experience.
