I've worked for a few startup that were grant funded and its not a great approach for funding. The grants have their own goals, and while there is some overlap, they usually don't align with the companies ultimate goal. You end up spending a lot of money but not reaching to goal post. Then there is the issue of rolling the dice in getting the grant. A paying customer is much easier to manage and predict.
