When someone asks you "Do you have any plans for the weekend?", will you answer with what you're going to on saturday, or sunday, or both? For me, "weekend" very much means one unit consisting of saturday and sunday and most often friday night as well. "Weekend" meaning a single day which can be either saturday or sunday seems not to match any use of the word "weekend" I've ever encountered both in personal life and in things like TV shows.
