Averaging 1.5 bears a year since 1980. Is that a lot?
- tomjakubowski 3y agoThe state grizzly population is about 2,100. Seems like a lot, compared to per capita human-train deaths
- steve_adams_86 3y agoLooks like that would be over 780 people hit by trains per year at that rate. I’m guessing that’s a couple orders of magnitude higher, haha. These bears have a problem on their hands.
- tomalbrc 3y agoTurns out humans get hit by trains much more often than you would think
- tomjakubowski 3y agoOn the order of 1000 train fatalities per year in the United States the Montana grizzly bear rate is >200x the American person rate!
- tomjakubowski 3y ago780 people hit per year in Montana's population yeah? At national population (1.5/2100/*3.5e6) the Montana train-bear fatality rate would correspond to a rate of 214k people hit per year.
- steve_adams_86 3y agoHa, yeah. I should have specified I was basing that off of Montana human and grizzly populations.
