Reducing Raspberry Pi 5's power consumption by 140x
- tromp 3y ago> a Pi 5 will still sit there consuming 1.2-1.6W when completely shut down, even without anything plugged in except power. > Why is this? > Apparently some HATs have trouble if the 3v3 power rail is off, but 5v is still active— I had to look up HAT to find it stands for ‘hardware attached on top’, ie. expansion boards.
- justinclift 3y agoUgh, clickbait title from the author: Sorry to clickbait with that title... If you're sorry, then how about just not doing it?
- cpressland 3y agoProbably because he immediately follows up with: > but it's actually true.
- justinclift 3y agoDoesn't excuse it.
- dartos 3y agoIf it’s true, is it clickbait?
- justinclift 3y agoIf the author didn't think it was clickbait, then they wouldn't have apologised for doing it.
- geerlingguy 3y agoI only apologized because some people love to shout "clickbait" at any headline that has anything sensational about it, regardless of truth or merit. In this case it is entirely true, but some people would inevitably spend a bunch of time in comments arguing over whether or not the headline was clickbait, so I thought I'd just nip that conversation in the bud. Apparently it didn't work ;)
- justinclift 3y agoSeems like people object to "sensational" titles (aka clickbait) regardless of the article contents. Perhaps it's something to do with treating your readers disrespectfully? ;)
- geerlingguy 3y agoApparently adding a ;) doesn't convey my intent that well... It's hard to convey any sense of sarcasm in written fora.
- sweetjuly 3y agoIt is relevant though, as the author points out, because you can use this to reduce your "deep sleep" power consumption since RTC still runs after SoC power off. I don't know who is using a Pi 5 in low power applications given it is fairly power hungry compared to other practical options, but it's still good to know if you are.
- aae42 3y ago> I don't know who is using a [raspberry pi] in [any particular] applications given it is fairly [poorly suited] compared to other practical options, but it's still good to know if you are. Sums up 90% of Jeff Geerling videos/articles. Can't say they aren't educational, though.
- DistractionRect 3y agoSome people use these to make a diy replacement head unit for their cars, and in that case, the power draw when off is very important.
- TheFuzzball 3y ago"How to cut the Pi 5's powered-off consumption by 99%"
- clircle 3y agoI thought the title was mathematically uncouth as well
