I've never heard of this. It seems nature is quite creative in having so many ways to kill you off. There are a lot of different prion diseases, too. A colleague of mine had one that led to his death. He didn't lose mental acuity, but he could barely walk, very unstable even just standing, and he shook a lot. Over time, he had to have parts of his lungs removed. Apparently fluid buildup from not breathing properly can cause additional damage.
