Show HN: Chrome addon to lookup selected text via ChatGPT using custom prompts
Made this (GPT-4 made this actually) for myself mainly to do quick lookups on selected text. Add your api key and then your own system prompts in options. Then from context menu send selected text to ChatGPT with one of your prompts. Result should appear on top of page.
I haven't looked much into publishing this on store yet, might do that later. At the moment, you have to load this in Developer mode via Load Unpacked button on extensions page in chrome.
Tip: if you have only one prompt enabled, context menu will not be nested.

- stevenicr 3y agoI don't understand how to know and check if chrome extensions intercept this kind of data to or from... (and send a copy back to X or Y ) A similar thing is in the 'awesome screenshot' extension (I think) - but I fear data can be exfiltrated - and if not now, when it is sold or taken over or changed in the future. So I don't use extensions this way - but maybe I should know how to check and enjoy the benefits - I just don't know.
- punkybr3wster 3y agoThe current state of the code isn’t obfuscated in any way that I can see. You can easily pop through the JS and see exactly what it’s doing. The extension itself is pretty simple to follow.
- smusamashah 3y agoThere is nothing fishy going on. You can see the source it is small and simple. And because it is not on store, what you see is what you get when you load it. Background.js file is the one that sends chat completion request to openai. EDIT: There is https://github.com/dnakov/little-rat https://github.com/dnakov/little-rat to tell you which URLs your installed extensions are hitting.
- runjake 3y agoThe extension is great. The example prompts are kind of useless and some might say, immature. Perhaps some of these might be better inspiration? I use them all the time with Raycast AI commands: Decline email|invitation|etc: Given the following text: ''' {selection} ''' Use the following instructions to rewrite the text: ''' Decline the email and say that I'm not interested for now. Use a casual tone of voice and be friendly. End with greeting from me. ''' Rewritten text: Summarize text: Summarize this text as a list of key takeaways: ''' {selection} ''' I have another one called "Improve writing" which is pretty easy to figure out a prompt for. I use this all the time to have ChatGPT better articulate my writings/emails and fix spelling and grammar. Mine is full of PII and me-specific content and I'm on mobile, otherwise I'd paste it. I'll try to sanitize it and post it later.
- smusamashah 3y agoRight, Good point. There can be better examples. My common use case is translation and explaining things. I haven't used it much myself at this point, jumbled it up a day ago and posting here was me shipping it.
