When I get old, I can buy an EV of the future. It will for sure have better range and faster charging that what's on the market now. Most busy corridors like sf-LA have the well known charge stations full and backed up making the delay multiple times longer. The point about stopping wherever is that my stops won't have to be near any out of the way chargers. Of course an EV can stop wherever, but it also requires a pilgramage to somewhere I never wanted to go.
