Psychedelic treatments are speeding towards approval: no one knows how they work
- jfengel 3y agoWe don't really understand the mechanism of action of most drugs. That has never been necessary. The gold standard has always been "Does it work better than placebo in a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial?" People get up in arms about psychedelics because these drugs have recreational uses. That owes a lot more to puritanism than to serious consideration of the medicine, or even really thinking about addiction. They just define it as unusable, and prevent any research that might prove otherwise. Nobody would bring up the fact that we don't know the mechanism of action if it were any other medicine.
