How dedicated can you be to your job if you have time to write code for free?
- redbell 3y agoI don't necessarily agree with the poster of the tweet as he triggered what appears to be a controversy but wanted to see other opinions from other angles.
- rzzzwilson 3y ago> how dedicated can you really be to your job if you have this much spare time to write code for free? Rather an odd viewpoint. This "FAANG hiring manager" seems to expect someone s/he hires to have no life beyond the workspace. What sort of turnover does s/he consider to be normal? I do the best job I can at work, beyond even what I'm asked to do, and doing something I enjoy in my own time, whatever that is, recharges my batteries. In one extreme case, at a rather deadening job, I decided to learn to fly to stop myself from just resigning. "Medieval" indeed!
- fuzzfactor 3y agoWhen someone comes along whose code is so good that a small-to-medium percentage of it is more than enough for a decent employer to rake in the bucks on, it would be downright medieval for us to hire such a candidate. We have habitually been screening for and only considering below-average performers using proven techniques and experience has shown that bringing in just a single average-to-above-average performer will disrupt everything and only result in making everyone else look bad.

- elmerfud 3y agoI'm as dedicated to my job as my job is to me. If the agreed upon salary is for 40 hours, that's my dedication level. What hobbies I choose to do outside of that is my business. If my hobbies and my work are the same type of thing, that's also my business. Maybe as a hiring manager you should be offering overtime pay if you're looking to intrude in to the 128 hours of the week I didn't sell to you. Because that's outside of our agreement.
- DemocracyFTW2 3y ago> as a FAANG hiring manager, when i see a developer resume that has open source contributions, i put it in the discard pile. > to me it’s a red flag. how dedicated can you really be to your job if you have this much spare time to write code for free? I want your first-born child, NOW. Also, our data shows you've been reading a book on a Sunday afternoon instead of doing your assignments. This is your last warning.
- philipswood 3y agoHow dedicated can a FAANG hiring manager be if he has time for frivolous X posts?
- ZeroGravitas 3y agoThis appears to be a comedy troll account.
