Suicide website blocked by UK broadband providers
- Crosseye_Jack 3y agoAs for Sky, the block is done at the DNS level. Digging the domain from their DNS servers returns their "blocked page" ip address, Change which DNS servers you use and the site isn't blocked any more. Guessing they can't do DPI on the IP address for the site as its hosted behind Cloudflare. Problem is I recommend Sky customers change their DNS settings anyway (either on their device or on the router, but the router method requires saving a config backup, editing that backup and reapplying the backup because Sky don't expose DNS settings via their routers UI - or at least they didn't, dunno if they have changed that in recent routers/firmwares) because a lot of "connection drop outs" on Sky are related to their DNS servers failing, use another DNS provider and those issues are gone (but you also lose their "broadband shield" filtering) EDIT: Also their backup domain isn't block by Sky (but Sky have waves where they will also block backup domains so that might change esp as this is a new block, though one site (that might be on their block list because of a court order) back up domains haven't been added to the list for something like over a year now, so not sure if Sky gave up on the cat and mouse game. EDIT 2: Just to add, it seems that this site is only blocked when the customer has the ISP filtering enabled, if you have turned them off the site isn't blocked. So while I'm against blocking, at least this block can be turned off if the account holder desires unlike the court ordered blocking.
- foxyv 3y agoThis article leaves me a little disappointed. I was hoping to understand what exactly the website was doing. Are they encouraging euthanasia for terminal illness? Or is it just a black pill site encouraging young people to kill themselves?
- Crosseye_Jack 3y agoBoth? It’s basically a forum run by suicidal people; for suicidal people. Sites don’t like linking/naming the site because they don’t want to encourage people using the site. But you can’t really judge a book by its cover (esp when others are printing that cover) so I’ll link it https://sanctioned-suicide.net/ https://sanctioned-suicide.net/ so you can make up your own mind.
- foxyv 3y agoThank you, I understand not linking it, but the article was so vague it was like they were talking about Voldemort. I think I'm going to go setup a recurring donation to the Trevor project. I can't fix the insanity that makes projects like this website seem like a good idea, but hopefully I can mitigate it a little.
- Nextgrid 3y agoThe failing British society can't tolerate people from "checking out" from the endless grind, so obviously the site must be to blame and must be blocked. Maybe they should rather address the underlying factors which push people to suicide, but who am I kidding, that's a big no-no as it would inconvenience entrenched interests who profit off misery.
