If you're a programmer and want to quit, I wish you'd go be an EMT, paramedic, then move up to critical care. EMS is an industry full of poorly trained idiots and the profession as a whole would get a tremendous boost if good minds and smart people got up from the computer and learned how to take care of sick people.
- slothtrop 3y agoHow many years would it take to reach parity with SWE wage, or at least a middle-class wage? It seems like a high-stress field with long hours but low pay.
- Mountain_Skies 3y agoI have a friend who is an EMT and another who dances at a strip club. It always amazes me that the things they complain about are mostly the same management BS people complain about at office jobs.
- slothtrop 3y agoDitto the trades from the anecdotes I read, aside from the physical strain for some.
- ponector 3y agoIn many countries it is unachievable to reach parity with SWE at all for almost anyone in other field. Prime ministry of my country in EU has the same salary as regular "senior" engineer from local bodyshop like Epam.
- vdqtp3 3y agoMost EMTs make essentially minimum wage. Paramedics make less than entry level IT and SWEs. Nurses approach median wage in our industry, with a two year education requirement and a hell of a lot more work. You have to get to travel nursing (essentially consultants for nursing) or licensed provider status to make decent dev money. Your wish is worse than useless.
