In case of a major total war, any participant in the conflict would very likely quickly switch to a war economy, in practice a centrally planned economy. I'm sure there would still be ample opportunity for profiteering before the nuclear holocaust for the dedicated individual, but personally the return of investment would be the last of my worries.
