I disagree. I listen to a podcast about linguistics by John McWhorter (one of the people who signed this thing). He's gone on a few tangents about cancel culture, describing some really ridiculous situations where colleagues of his got fired by their university, or where speakers were 'deplatformed' on the flimsiest of pretexts. In his opinion, this has created a culture of fear within universities, where professors are terrified of losing their whole livelihood based on an overreaction or misunderstanding, which is stifling debate and discussion.
A quick look at X shows he hasn't posted there since 2021. I don't see any other social media profiles in the Google results for his name. So why is he signing this thing, if the real reason for it is to force Twitter to promote tweets or whatever?
That's just picking a name at random. I suspect there's a variety of motivations, and I think at best a handful are driven by a desire to get more attention on Twitter.
