Btrfs updates for 6.7 with new raid-stripe-tree
- nolist_policy 3y agoThe raid-stripe-tree is exciting for multiple reasons. For one, it finally solves the raid56 write-hole similar to how zfs does, by never updating the stripe in-place. And it is developed by Western Digital for use in zoned storage (host managed SMR), so there is a commercial user of btrfs raid now. This was missing before and was the reason btrfs raid didn't go anywhere for so long.
- Tajnymag 3y agoI thought Synology has used BTRFS on their higher end NAS devices.
- nolist_policy 3y agoYes but they don't contribute upstream. They run a old kernel with an enormous out of tree patchset on top to combine dm-raid with btrfs.
- Always_Anon 3y agoToo little to late unfortunately. Many have written btrfs off as a loss and are looking at alternatives. bcachefs is hopefully going to be the next step for file systems on Linux.
- paulryanrogers 3y agoConsidering how long file systems bake before seeing wide adoption, I'm curious if bcachefs has enough of an edge to gain popularity and widespread support. It's features look impressive.
