Meanwhile big tech thinks the way to reduce costs is to wholesale fire 1/2 their company.

- mcv 3y agoYeah, but corporations rarely fire only the incompetent people. Quite often it's the best paid engineers who get fired first because that saves the most money. And when there's a voluntary get-out program, it's the unappreciated competent people who are the most eager to leave.
- goalieca 3y agoThe two are not exclusive. Companies can run hundreds of programs many of which are not productive and actually hurt and frustrate engineering teams. Just in the same way government can hurt the environment by throwing up a lot of red tape on green initiatives, companies can hurt quality and productivity by spending thousands of hours on things like employee annual reviews.
