Any company that is run by people who're capable of reading and understanding history books would probably not do that.
IBM released the PC in 1981 and effectively left the "standardized component" PC market in 2001, when they shut down the Aptiva line. That's a 20 year run, which saw IBM try to move away from Intel and into their own RISC processors for the last 5 years.
And its height, IBM was shipping 750,000 computers a year. In 2022, Apple sold that many iPhones every day.
IBM created a market by allowing other companies to make PC clones, but that pushed margins to unworkable levels and effectively forced them out of the market.
